I was scrolling along and encountered this GIF and all I could think of is that this is basically what my brother (who is my partner in ‘crime’, pranks, shenanigans, and MST3K movie nights) and I look like upon encountering our parents right after we’ve been up to something.
"You can’t because you’re a girl."
I think I need to pause and explain how and why this phrase makes me so mad. I encountered it today and no amount of laughter of distraction has erased the fact that it was said to me, and that the person who said it treated it like absolute truth.
I fucking hate that phrase.
Now before someone reads this (if anyone does) and goes “WOO! WOMAN RULE AND MEN DROOL!” let me say this, it was said to me by another woman, and that’s not why I hate the phrase. Sure, I firmly believe that men a woman should be on an equal playing field, but note I say equal not something else. Equal.
I don’t hate any gender or orientation or race, I really don’t, I have issues with some religions but that’s only on the bases of them hurting and/or demeaning others for the sake of their beliefs.
But back to that phrase, “You can’t because you’re a girl.” no context, no explanation needed. When it’s said about something that is not simply a rooted biological difference it’s absurd. Not just because the genders are equal (if often more biologically geared to different things), but because in that one statement you claim that someone is limited to certain thing by their fundamental makeup. Which is like claiming someone can’t do something because of their race or orientation, absurd. Saying girls do these things, boys do these things, and you can only stay in your box denies use the greatest spice of life,
And I’m pretty goddamn sure Littlefoot sang a song about this, in fact, here it is. It does take all sorts to make this world worth being in, and saying you can’t because of gender, race, age, orientation, anything such just limits that. Butch strait girls, wise children, immature adults, that meathead jock you sat next to in history and that geekazoid who was always ruining the stinking grading curve. Neither one of them is better then the other so long as they simply are, in fact, if you’re friendly to those people and listen to them you might find that those even smaller boxes of ‘meathead’ and ‘geek’ don’t totally fit them either. Now I’m not saying stereotypes don’t exist, I’ve know a few, but the thing is that you don’t have to be a stereotype, just so long as you live as what you are and do no harm to others then you’re doing pretty damn well and don’t have to be anything different. And it’s this idea that gets mushed by the “You can’t because you’re a girl.” type of phrase.
I’m not going to sit here and hawk the “You can be anything you want honey because you’re a golden flower” shit either. Yes, everyone is different, no, you can’t be anything you want, but you can be something and someone you love. And more often then not is more important in the end. Life is a brief, confusing, and unsure thing in the grand scheme of all things. So don’t try and limit others based on arbitrary concepts, instead just let them be as they are and you be as you are and don’t and neither of you hurt others to be like that. Sure you won’t be happy all the time, but life is nothing with out contrast. So make the most of it.
I think all the aliens and cultures in Doctor Who have (mostly) British/American accents because these are the accents the companions are familiar with and understand easiest so to make it easy for them to understand and communicate the TARDIS translates all accents and languages into one language and accent through the translation function it (she I mean) has. A mean, do we even know if the Doctor speaks English or has a that accent? Or if he sounds the same to everyone he meets even? What if the TARDIS just translates him that way.
Edit: I didn’t notice but it seems my ‘Who drew this? Does anyone know?’ comment didn’t end up on the full post, oh well, anyways an anon informed me that it was drawn by aiwa-sensei, who it turns out is a fantastic artist with a fantastic blog and you should go check it out.
Also dear anon, thanks for telling me, although not in the kindest way, who drew this. I found this uncredited on another site and my intent was to post it here to find the origin, not to steal, but it seems I messed that up pretty grandly (though I never claimed it as my own). Now it’s all properly credited and linked back. Thanks and sorry for offending you and anyone else.
